Epilepsy is a disorder involving recurring seizures without a specific trigger or cause. A seizure means that there is a sudden change in the way brain cells send electrical signals to each other. This can interfere with the senses, and a person's awareness of things around them, and/or their movement. There are a number of different types of seizures and, while some people may experience only one type, others may experience more than one.
Most of the time, there is no known specific cause of epilepsy. But for some people, an accident, trauma, or illness (such as a tumor, stroke, or infection) that injures the brain may be a cause. Sometimes epilepsy can be inherited.
Lennox-Gastaut syndrome is one of the most severe forms of epilepsy and accounts for up to 10 percent of all cases of childhood epilepsy.
